Dissolved sulfate δ 34 S and the origin of sulfate in coal mine waters; NE England

نویسندگان

چکیده

Coal mine waters have been sampled during a reconnaissance study in the East Midlands, South Yorkshire and Tyneside areas of England. Almost all had similar δ 18 O 2 H concentrations, indicating derivation from Holocene recharge (average −7.9 −54‰, respectively, excluding two outliers). Most emerging by shallow gravity drainage dissolved sulfate 34 S levels <+10‰, suggesting oxidation pyrite. Deeper waters, pumped boreholes or shafts, tended to be more saline with >+14‰ and, cases, >+30‰. The these latter cannot readily explained as deriving pyrite oxidation. Alternative hypotheses (evaporitic marine brines, evaporite dissolution partially-closed-system microbial reduction) can invoked explanations. A general hypothesis proposes that deep groundwaters/mine regarded ‘sinks’, whose concentration is controlled dynamic equilibrium between rates mobilization various sources removal precipitation reduction. A Review of Sulfate Removal Options for Mine Waters

Sulfide oxidation is a common phenomenon associated with many mined ore bodies and extracted or processed waste. Where the products of these chemical reactions can enter a water body the result is often a reduction in water quality through the increase of acidity, metals and dissolved salts. Due to an attributed lower environmental impact the release of sulfate has received little attention in ...

Neoarchean carbonate-associated sulfate records positive Δ³³S anomalies.

Mass-independent fractionation of sulfur isotopes (reported as Δ(33)S) recorded in Archean sedimentary rocks helps to constrain the composition of Earth's early atmosphere and the timing of the rise of oxygen ~2.4 billion years ago. Although current hypotheses predict uniformly negative Δ(33)S for Archean seawater sulfate, this remains untested through the vast majority of Archean time. We appl...

Distribution and source identification of dissolved sulfate by dual isotopes in waters of the Babu subterranean river basin, SW China

Sulfur and oxygen isotopes were employed to identify SO42- sources in surface water and groundwater in the Babu subterranean river basin (BSRB). Our study revealed SO42- enrichment in the BSRB waters compared with adjacent areas. The SO42- in some samples originated mainly from precipitation; in others, it was derived mainly from sulfide dissolution in coal seams or from gypsum dissolution. In ...

Reduction of Sulfate Concentrations in Neutral Mine Effluent

Elevated concentrations of sulfate (500-4000 mg/L) exist in certain neutral drainages that contain reactive rock, but sufficient carbonate to neutralize the sulfuric acid produced. Due to concerns that sulfate may degrade surface water, cost-effective methods are required for reducing the contaminant load into these streams. This review examines methods primarily for sulfate removal, although s...
